Hard shading comes from fixed opaque objects, like a chimney or a neighbouring building, and it forces bypass diodes to activate. Diffuse shading comes from things like tree branches or light cloud, and it reduces output more gradually without necessarily triggering the diodes.

Hard shading is the more damaging of the two, particularly when it falls on the same cells day after day.
